Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Lakewood BlueClaws scored early and never looked back, taking a 7-3 win over the Hickory Crawdads before 2,323 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Thursday night. SS Leury Garcia finished the night 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The BlueClaws (34-25, 76-53) got on the board right away with three runs in the top of the first inning against 'Dads starter RHP Jake Brigham (4-5, 3.55 ERA). With runners on at first and second and two outs, 2B Jeremy Barnes hit an RBI double to left field, bringing in LF Michael Dabbs from second with 1B Jonathan Singleton taking third. 3B Stephen Batts then hit a two-run single to right, plating both Singleton and Barnes to put Lakewood up, 3-0.
Hickory (30-28, 70-58) responded right away with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the first against BlueClaws starter RHP Joshua Zeid (7-4, 3.02 ERA). LF Travis Adair started the frame with a leadoff home run that sailed over the wall in right field. After back-to-back singles by Garcia and CF Jared Bolden put runners on the corners with no outs, C Zach Zaneski lofted a sacrifice fly to deep right field, allowing Garcia to come in from third and cut the 'Dads deficit to 3-2.
Lakewood added a run in the top of the third and fourth innings. Singleton led off the third with a triple and was brought in on an RBI groundout by C Sebastian Valle. In the fourth, RF Anthony Hewitt hit a leadoff homer to left field, extending the BlueClaws lead to 5-2.
Hickory trimmed the Lakewood lead to 5-3 in the fifth on an RBI single by Garcia that drove in 1B Mike Ortiz from second. However, the BlueClaws padded their advantage with two more runs in the top of the ninth frame to account for the eventual final score of 7-3.
Brigham takes the loss for Hickory, surrendering five runs on eight hits and three walks with five strikeouts through five innings. RHP Kyle Ocampo followed with three perfect innings of relief, fanning five, before RHP Sam Brown took over in the ninth. Zeid got the win for Lakewood with RHP Mike McGuire picking up the save.
