Jackets Drop Series Opener to Columbus

Columbus, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets (41-28, 24-14) dropped the opener of a four game series to the Columbus Catfish (27-43, 19-16) on Tuesday night 6-4. Starter Chance Corgan recorded the loss and the Catfish moved to 3.5 games back of Augusta in the Southern Division.

The Catfish broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning when Greg Sexton connected for a three-run homer off of reliever Dan Turpen for a 4-1 advantage. Corgan began the inning getting the first batter to ground out but then allowed a single to Stephen Voght and a double to Reid Fronk before being lifted for Turpen.

Corgan (2-4) worked 4.1 innings allowing three runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out two.

The Catfish made it 5-1 in the sixth inning when Shawn O'Mally got a two-out double and Voght followed with an RBI single off of reliever Nate Pendley.

The GreenJackets pulled to within one in the seventh inning scoring three runs. Dayton Buller led off the half inning with a homer, his first since joining Augusta. Dom Duggan drove in a run reaching on a fielder's choice and Nick Noonan connected for a two-out RBI single to make it 5-4 Columbus.

The Catfish got another run in the eighth inning to push the lead to 6-4. Trey Webb issued two walks in the half inning after working 1.2 innings in relief and was lifted for left-hander Wilmin Rodriguez. Rodriguez could not find the strike zone walking two straight batters on eight pitches to force in another run.

Columbus took the early lead in the game scoring in the second inning on three consecutive singles to start off the frame. Ian Paxton ‘s RBI single gave the Catfish a 1-0 lead.

Augusta tied the game in the fifth inning on back-to-back two-out doubles from Charlie Culberson and Duggan.

The GreenJackets and Catfish continue their series on Tuesday with Augusta sending left-hander Scott Barnes to the mound for his first start of the season with Augusta since being called up from Short-Season Salem-Keizer. Columbus counters with right-hander Jesse Darcy (4-2, 2.73). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

Game Notes:

The GreenJackets fell to 30-22 on the road.

Augusta remains in first place in the Southern Division, 2.0 games up on Asheville and 3.5 games up on the Columbus Catfish

Duggan drove in two runs for Augusta in the loss.
