New Jersey Jackals News Release
Augusta, NJ - The Sussex Skyhawks handed the New Jersey Jackals a pair of losses on Tuesday night at Skylands Park. Sussex rallied for a 6-5 win in the opener before the Jackals dropped the nightcap 7-4.
In game one, Sussex 2B Joe Persichina laced a game-tying two-run double to right in the bottom of the sixth before scoring the winning run on the same play courtesy of a New Jersey throwing error with closer Romas Hicks (0-2) on the mound. In the losing effort, CF Adam Godwin and SS Dan Betteridge each collected two hits while RF Carlos Sosa added an RBI double in the fifth inning. Right-hander Mike Vicaro (5-2) allowed four earned runs in six innings to earn the win while Duaner Sanchez stranded the tying run at second base in the top of the seventh to notch his 14th save of the season. Jayson Miller started for the Jackals and yielded three runs on nine hits in five frames.
In the second contest, Sussex built a 7-2 lead behind a three-run homer from DH Caleb Stewart in the second and a leadoff shot by 3B Nick Giarraputo in the third as the Skyhawks chased New Jersey starter Isaac Pavlik (6-4) from the game after just three innings. The Jackals rallied for two runs in the sixth inning keyed by an Adam Godwin RBI triple to right center, but this time Jared Locke tossed a scoreless seventh to pick up the save for Sussex. Pavlik's line included seven runs on eight hits in three frames. Sussex reliever Donald Jordat tossed three innings to earn the win.
The Jackals (6-9 second half, 25-26 overall) and Skyhawks (5-10, 30-31) will continue their four-game series on Wednesday morning at 11:05 a.m. when they play their third contest in less than 24 hours. New Jersey will send right-hander Chris Vasami (1-0, 2.89) to the mound against Sussex righty Tim Stringer (3-3, 4.97).
