Sussex Skyhawks News Release

Augusta, N.J. - August 3, 2010 - The Skyhawks came back from three different deficits on Tuesday night at CenturyLink Field at Skylands Park en route to a sweep of a doubleheader against the visiting New Jersey Jackals.

New Jersey opened up an early 2-0 lead in game one thanks to second-inning RBI singles by Angel Flores and Adam Godwin, but Sussex quickly erased the disadvantage in the third when the top of the order rattled off four straight hits to drive in three runs.

Sussex starter Mike Vicaro (5-2) struck out seven in six innings of work, but he allowed another three runs in the fifth inning on three hits, one walk and one error to fall behind 5-3. The Skyhawks offense picked him up again an inning later, however, as Joe Persichina doubled in two runs against right-handed reliever Romas Hicks (0-2) and scored on a two-base throwing error by Travis Jones to give the home team a 6-5 lead. Right-handed closer Duaner Sanchez retired the side in the ninth to notch his 14th save of the season.

The Skyhawks fell behind early again in game two but roared back from a 1-0 deficit in the first to grab a 6-2 lead against New Jersey left-hander Isaac Pavlik (6-4) after two innings. Nick Giarraputo singled home two runs as part of a three-run bottom of the first for Sussex, and Caleb Stewart launched a three-run homerun over the Bud Light sign by the left field foul pole in the second inning to give starting pitcher Kevin Gunter some early breathing room. Gunter and right-hander Donald Jordat (2-4) each pitched three innings and allowed two runs in the 7-4 victory. Giarraputo added a solo homerun, and left-hander Jared Locke picked up his second save of the year.

The Skyhawks (5-10 second half, 30-31 overall) and Jackals (6-9, 25-36) continue their four-game series Wednesday at 11:05 a.m. Sussex right-hander Tim Stringer (3-3, 4.97) opposes New Jersey right-hander Chris Vasami (1-0, 2.89) on Camp Day and Mom's Day at Skylands Park.
