
Jackals still alive after twin bill sweep

Little Falls, NJ- The Jackals stayed alive in the race for the first half South Division Championship by sweeping a double header with the Elmira Pioneers.
In game one, the Jackals rode a stellar outing from Brad Whitworth to an 8-0 win over Elmira.
In the second inning, Chris Rowan continued to crush the ball. Rowan hit a solo homerun, his tenth of the season, giving the Jackals an early 1-0 lead.
Four more runs would score for the Jackals in the bottom of the third. Wady Almonte singled with the bases loaded, scoring one. Scott Goodman then doubled with the bases loaded, pushing two runs across. With two outs, Elmira starter Saul Solveson tossed to first to check on the runner, but Rick Elder was not covering the base. The error allowed Almonte to score, making it 5-0 New Jersey.
The Jackals added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Kevin Grijak pushed one across with a sacrifice fly, and Almonte singled with the bases loaded, scoring two more. Through six, the Jackals held an 8-0 advantage.
For the Jackals, Brad Whitworth pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only four hits, while striking out five. The win gives Whitworth three on the season.
Starter Saul Solveson only lasted three innings, giving up four earned runs on five hits, for the Pioneers. He got the loss.
For Elmira, Jason Bryan was 1-3 with a double.
Wady Almonte was 2-4 with three RBI, for the Jackals.
In Game 2, the Jackals again fed on stellar starting pitching and squeezed out a 1-0 victory over the Pioneers.
Both starting pitchers, Aaron Myers for New Jersey, and Curt Borland for Elmira, pitched lights out into the sixth inning.
New Jersey finally broke through against Elmira reliever Matt Elfedt in the bottom of the sixth. With John Anderson aboard second base, Kevin Grijak singled, scoring Anderson, giving the Jackals a 1-0 lead, and that is the way it ended.
Aaron Myers had his best outing of 2004. Myers pitched a complete game, scattering three hits, walking none, and fanning 11. He improves his record to 3-1 on the season.
Curt Borland, of the Pioneers, pitched five and two thirds innings, giving up one earned run on two hits. He was awarded a tough loss.
For the Jackals, Kevin Grijak was 1-3 with an RBI.
Rick Elder was 1-3 for the Pioneers.
The Jackals and the Pioneers will play a double header on Wednesday, July 14, 2004. The first game, which was originally scheduled to start at 12:05 p.m, will begin promptly at 11:05 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium. The second game will immediately follow the first.
