Cutters Finish First Half with 2-0 Win; New Haven Now Plays Waiting Game

July 13, 2004 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release

Utica, NY- The New Haven County Cutters (25-21) finished the first half of the season by blanking the Aces (9-37) 2-0 on Tuesday night. The Cutters will now have to wait for the results of Wednesday's doubleheader between the New Jersey Jackals and Elmira Pioneers to know if they have clinched the first half South Division title in the Northeast League.

The Cutters opened the game with back to back singles from P.J. Johnston and Gavin Fingleson to put runners on first and second with nobody out against Aces All-star lefty Alex Pena. Then with two out and runners on the corners, Darren Ciraco singled home Johnston to give New Haven a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Ciraco singled to center to lead off the inning and then advanced to second when the ball was misplaced by centerfielder Coby Smith. Two batters later, Ciraco scored on a RBI double by catcher Adam Shorsher giving the Cutters a 2-0 lead.

After delivering the game tying home run in last night's game, Ciraco had another impressive night with the bat going 3-for-4 with a RBI.

New Haven All-star lefty Jordy Alexander (5-2) was magnificent, tossing seven scoreless innings while striking out nine. Alexander retired 21 of the 24 batters he faced, allowing only three hits. Thirty-five year old left hander Greg McCarthy pitched two scoreless innings to earn his first save as a Cutter. Alex Pena (2-4) allowed one earned run over eight innings and took the loss.

After the Jackals 8-0 and 1-0 victories over Elmira on Tuesday night, New Jersey is one game behind New Haven and needs to win both games of Wednesday's doubleheader to finish in a first place tie. If the Cutters and Jackals end up in a tie at the completion of Wednesday's games, the two teams will compete in a one game playoff on Thursday in New Haven to determine the South Division champion.

After every Friday night home game this summer, a fireworks show will light up the New Haven sky. "Win Jonathan Fleisig's Money" is during every Saturday Game at Yale Field where fans can actually win money from the owner of the Cutters for watching and enjoying a night at the ballpark. Every Sunday is a WEBE 108 Family FUNday with plenty of entertainment to keep all ages entertained. Tickets for these games and others are available by calling the Cutters front office, 203-777-5636, or through the team's website, cuttersbaseball.com.
