Elmira Jackals News Release
Week 11 Game Results:
12/30/05 Adirondack 5 @ Elmira 4
Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals led three times in the first period, but couldn't come back from a 2-goal deficit in the second period, losing 5-4 to the Adirondack Frostbite Friday night at the First Arena.
The Jackals grabbed the lead three times in the opening twenty minutes, but Adirondack always had an answer. Konstantin Kalmikov opened the scoring at 7:43 from Chris Chaput and Jarrett Konkle, but less than a minute later Kevin Watters tied the game at one at 8:28. New defenseman Mathieu Wathier scored in his Jackals debut on a slap shot from the blue line, making it 2-1 Elmira at 11:45. Three minutes later the Frostbite again tied the score when Hugo Belanger tapped in a rebound at 14:53. Elmira again pulled ahead courtesy of a Chaput goal at 18:51, assisted by Konkle and Kalmikov. But with just 4.6 seconds left in the period, Scott Drevitch tied the game at three.
In the second period the Jackals momentum turned; Adirondack scored twice and Elmira had two goals disallowed. Watters scored his second of the game, a power play goal, at 11:10 to give the Frostbite their first lead of the game. Then at 14:38 it was 5-3 Adirondack when Mark Hurtubise scored, assisted by Belanger and Watters. Belanger finished with 4 points on the game (1 goal, 3 assists), Watters and Hurtubise each had 3 points. At 15:47 defenseman Dmitri Suur received a 5-minute major and a game misconduct for kneeing, but the Jackals failed to capitalize on the big power play.
In the third period Elmira drew one back when Konkle scored his 18th goal of the season, assisted by Chaput and Kalmikov at 17:26, but it was too little, too late. Elmira out-shot Adirondack 13-6 in the final period, but only lit the lamp once.
Derek Gustafson earned the win in goal for the Frostbite, stopping 34-of-38 shots. Nick Boucher took the loss, making 26 saves on 31 shots before being pulled with 5 minutes left in the second period. Ryan McIntosh finished the game in net for Elmira, shutting down the Frostbite, stopping all 6 shots he faced. Adirondack was 1-for-2 on the power play, while Elmira finished 0-for-4. The Jackals play 3 of their next 4 games against Adirondack.
12/31/05 Elmira 2 @ Adirondack 3 - SO (2-1 in Shootout)
Glens Falls, NY - The Elmira Jackals twice led the Adirondack Frostbite by a goal before losing in a shootout 3-2 Saturday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
After a rough first period where Adirondack out-shot the Jackals 18-4 but failed to score, Elmira took the lead on a horrible Frostbite mistake. Goaltender Derek Gustafson came forward out of his net to play a loose puck, but hit Jackals forward Josh Tataryn with his clearing attempt. Tataryn corralled the puck and then easily wristed the puck past a stranded Gustafson at 2:49 for his first goal since being traded to Elmira. But Adirondack struck back, rookie forward Mike Berry tied the game at 4:36 on the power play to even the score at one. Elmira, however, wasted no time in regaining their lead. Jason Sessa bombed a slap shot that ripped past Gustafson from the top of the right face off circle at 5:24, pulling the Jackals ahead 2-1. But Berry wasn't done quite yet. The Frostbite rookie finished off a brilliant 2-on-1 with Kevin Watters, knocking in his second goal of the game at 14:06 to tie the game at two.
Elmira came out in the third period like Adirondack started the game, pushing the tempo and holding the advantage in shots. The Jackals out-shot the Frostbite 14-10 over the final period, but it was the goaltenders that out-shined the scorers as both Gustafson and Elmira's Ryan McIntosh made excellent saves to send the game into a shootout.
In the overtime session, Berry immediately put Adirondack in front by scoring in round one. Jarrett Konkle tied it at one in the fourth round, but Mart Hurtubise scored in the bottom of the round as they Jackals lost the shootout 2-1.
Derek Gustafson earned the win, despite his costly blunder, stopping 28-of-30 shots and 4-of-5 in the shootout. Ryan McIntosh was sensational in goal for the Jackals, making 38 saves on 40 shots and 2-of-4 in the shootout. Adirondack was 1-for-7 on the power play in the game, while Elmira was 0-for-5.
1/1/06 Elmira 3 @ Richmond 2
Richmond, VA - The Elmira Jackals came back from a two-goal deficit to beat the Richmond Riverdogs 3-2 Sunday afternoon at the Richmond Coliseum.
The Jackals started off 2006 with a gutsy win over the Riverdogs. In the first period, Richmond appeared to come out flat, but Elmira failed to take advantage of a tired Richmond team playing their 4th game in 5 days. Both teams were playing their second game in less than 24 hours, but Richmond got a boost when the Jackals defense had an early letdown. Rafal Martynowski scored on a one-timer at 4:45 during an Elmira lapse in their own end, giving Richmond a big momentum shift. The Jackals out-shot the âDogs 14-11 in the first period, but goaltender Mike D'Alessandro was in top form early in the game. Right before the end of the period, Richmond forward Bobby Kukulka was given a 5-minute major for slew-footing and a Match Penalty for a deliberate attempt to injure Jackals defenseman Mathieu Wathier.
But Elmira was unable to cash in on the 5-minute power play, clanging the post twice, but failing to score. Richmond then doubled their lead at 12:12 when R.C. Lyke one-timed the puck past goalie Ryan McIntosh for a power play goal and the scoreboard read 2-0. But Elmira, who has found themselves on the short end of the bounces this season finally got some luck when Jason Sessa's shot took a deflection off a Richmond skate and into the net at 16:46 to cut the Riverdogs lead in half. It was Sessa's 6th goal since rejoining the Elmira this year.
Jackals leading goal scorer Jarrett Konkle tied the game at 8:08 of the third period with a power play goal, his 19th of the season, assisted by Chris Chaput and Trevor Burgess. The Riverdogs fatigue was evident and Elmira rushed in for the kill. Kevin Cooper gave Elmira their first lead at 10:29 when his wrap-around shot snuck through D'Alessandro, assisted by Sessa and Carl Drakensjo. The Jackals out-shot Richmond in each period and 33-20 overall in the game for their 8th win of the year.
Ryan McIntosh earned his 4th win of the season while blocking 18-of-20 shots, pushing Elmira beyond the 20-point plateau. Mike D'Alessandro was very good for Richmond, making 30 saves on 33 shots in the losing effort.
