Jackals return favor with sweep of Cutters

Little Falls, NJ- The Jackals returned the favor to the New Haven County Cutters, completing a three game sweep, with a 5-2 victory on Independence Day

Jimmy Hurst homered in the top of the first off New Jersey starter Joel Bennett, giving the Cutters an early 1-0 lead.

New Jersey tied up the ballgame in the third on an RBI single by Kevin Grijak.

The Cutters would jump ahead once again in the fourth on a Kevin Forbes solo homerun.

The Jackals broke open the ballgame in the bottom of the fourth, while sending eight batters to the plate. Alberto Vasquez pushed across Chris Rowan, to tie the ballgame. John Anderson then singled, scoring Jay LaFlair, giving New Jersey the lead. On a throwing error by Hector Lebron, Vasquez scored, and Anderson advanced to second base. Zack Smithlin singled for the second time in the ballgame, scoring Anderson. Through four innings, the Jackals led the Cutters 5-2, and that's the way it ended.

Joel Bennett, the New Jersey starter, left the game after four innings of work. Bennett pitched four innings, giving up two earned runs, two homeruns, walked four, and struck out four. Evan Neiser pitched three innings in relief, giving up only three hits. He received the victory. Fabricio Benitez came in for the ninth inning, and picked up his third save of the season

New Haven starting pitcher Jordy Alexander pitched six innings, giving up five runs, only three earned runs, and eight hits. He was awarded the loss.

Jackals' centerfielder Zack Smithlin went 3-4 with an RBI. Albert Vasquez, Chris Rowan, and John Anderson all had two hits for New Jersey

The Jackals now sit only two games behind New Haven in the South Division

The Jackals go on the road, and begin a three game set with the Elmira Pioneers on Monday, June 5, 2004. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Make sure not to miss a pitch of the 2004 season.
