Jackals Pounce on Monarchs in 6-2 Win

ELMIRA, N.Y. - A four-goal third period doomed the Manchester Monarchs, as they fell to the Elmira Jackals, 6-2, Friday night at First Arena.

The Monarchs (33-21-7-4) dropped their season record against the Jackals (16-41-7-1) to 5-3-2-0, and will play their next four games against their North Division foes.

After a scoreless first period, Mark Bennett opened the scoring when he netted his 7th goal of the season at 1:36 of the opening period. Sam Povorozniouk drove the net and dropped a backhanded pass to the left dot where Bennett ripped a one-timer that deflected off Mario Puskarich and past the left leg of Monarchs goaltender, Jack Flinn, to put the Jackals up, 1-0.

The Monarchs tied things up when Tyler Elbrecht scored his 5th goal of the season at 3:09 of the second period. Rihards Bukarts set Elbrecht up with a pass from the slot, banking the puck off the skate of a driving Elbrecht into an open net past Jackals goaltender, Andy Iles, to tie the game, 1-1.

Manchester took the lead when Puskarich scored his 1st goal of the season at 6:03 of the middle frame. While on the power play, Teddy Doherty sent a slap-pass to the slot where Puskarich was camped, and the rookie deflected the puck past the left leg of Iles to give the Monarchs their first lead of the game, 2-1.

The Jackals tied things up when Povorozniouk scored his 18th goal of the season at 14:33 of the second stanza. Povorozniouk took a pass out of the right corner from Matt Stanisz in the slot, and one-timed a slapper past Flinn to tie the game, 2-2.

Elmira took the lead back when Sebastien Sylvestre scored his 21st goal of the year at 5:12 of the third period. Sylvestre played catch with Nathan Moon while attacking on a 2-on-2, and after Moon fired a shot from the right dot that produced a juicy rebound in the slot, Sylvestre had nothing but a wide-open net to shoot into to put the Jackals up, 3-2.

The Jackals grabbed a two-goal lead when Kenton Miller netted his 28th goal of the season at 8:50 of the final frame. While on the power play, Miller re-directed a slap-pass from Casey Thrush in the slot past Flinn, to make the score, 4-2, Elmira.

Elmira added to their lead when Thrush potted his 8th goal of the season at 15:30 of the third period. While on the power play, the Jackals put two shots on Flinn that the Monarchs goaltender stopped, but Thrush found the rebound in the slot and buried his shot with Flinn on his stomach, to push the Jackals lead to 5-2.

The Jackals ended the scoring when Bennett netted his 2nd of the night at 18:15 of the third period, a short-handed tally. Bennett found the puck in the right corner, whipped around the net and sent a wrap-around past a diving Flinn, to end the scoring, 6-2.

The Monarchs are back on the ice Saturday, Mar. 25 (7:05 p.m.), when they play the middle game of a three-game road series against the Jackals.

The Monarchs return home to SNHU Arena on Saturday, Apr. 1 (6 p.m.), when the host the Elmira Jackals for two games on Fan Appreciation Weekend. Tickets for the remainder of the season are available, HERE.
