New Jersey Jackals News Release
Worcester, MA - For the second consecutive night the New Jersey Jackals found themselves in an early hole after the Worcester Tornadoes jumped all over start Isaac Pavlik, scoring seven runs on the veteran left-hander on their way to a 7-6 win and 2-0 series lead in the first round of the Can-Am League playoffs.
The Tornadoes opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run from right fielder Carlos Sosa. The Jackals were able to add runs in the second and third with an RBI-groundout from left fielder Ryan Rogowski and a sac fly from first baseman Jerod Edmondson, but Worcester would keep the pressure on.
The bottom of the third would prove to be a back breaker for the Jackals. Worcester made it a 4-2 game after another two-run blast, this one from third baseman Chris Colabello - his second home run of the series. First baseman Nick Salotti and left fielder Alex Pena would drive in a run each as well with back-to-back RBI-doubles. Pavlik would eventually be lifted from the game with one out and a man on in the bottom of the fourth inning.
On the other side of the ball, Worcester right-hander Chris Farley was very solid, lasting into the seventh inning, and allowing four runs on eight hits while tying a season-high with eight strikeouts.
New Jersey would make things interesting down the stretch, scoring two runs in the seventh on an RBI-single from shortstop Mike DeJesus, before right fielder Myron Leslie was plunked by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run. In the eighth inning, trailing 7-4 and with right-hander Santiago Ramirez on the mound, Jackals second baseman Marcus Sanders crushed a two-run home run to left to cut the deficit to one.
In the ninth, with Tornadoes closer Anthony Sullivan on the mound, the Jackals would get Edmondson into scoring position with no outs, but the right-hander would retire the next three batters to shut the door on New Jersey.
New Jersey and Worcester will continue their best-of-five series tomorrow night with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch scheduled at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Jackals, facing elimination will send right-hander Ted Serro to the mound, while the Tornadoes will counter with left-hander Zach Zuercher. Joey Whelan will have the live call of the game at www.jackals.com with the pre-game show starting 10 minutes prior.
The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ.
