READING, PENN. -Mark Dekanich turned aside 33 shots and the Reading Royals (31-17-1-2) shut out the Elmira Jackals (9-35-6-1), 2-0, at Santander Arena Sunday evening. It was the final time the two teams play in Reading this season, with the Royals winning all five matchups in Reading, including a pair of shutout wins.
The Royals came out of the first period with a 1-0 lead, scoring in transition at 11:06 on a rebound near the left circle. Olivier Labelle skated into the Jackals zone, went out wide to the right wing circle and hammered a slap shot toward the far post. Jason Kasdorf made the initial save, but Tyrell Goulbourne found the rebound to give Reading a 1-0 lead.
The Jackals appeared to tie the game late in the first period on a point shot from Greg Amlong, but the goal was waved off for incidental contact on the goalie, keeping the Royals up 1-0 after the first period.
Elmira continued to press for a tying goal in the second period, outshooting the Royals 14-9 in the middle stanza, but Mark Dekanich stopped all of them to keep Reading ahead 1-0 after two periods.
The Royals added an insurance goal in the opening minute of the third period. On a carryover power play, the it was Ryan Penny who fired home a one-timer from the right wing circle just 48 seconds into the third period to give Reading a 2-0 lead. Dekanich stood tall the rest of the way for his first shutout of the season as the Jackals were blanked for the ninth time in 2016-17.
