Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The Reading Royals (win, 31-17-1-265) of the ECHL, affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League, defeated the Elmira Jackals (loss, 9-35-6-125), 2-0, at Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania.
In the final game of the regular season at Santander Arena between the Royals and Jackals, Reading registered the team's second shutout of the year-both against Elmira in this building-to push the team's record back to a season best fourteen games over .500. This zero was put up by goaltender Mark Dekanich, who made any number of Grade-A saves in his first shutout as a Royal. Reading got a first period pass-off-pad goal from Tyrell Goulbourne, which held up as the game winner. Ryan Penny added a power play insurance goal early in the third to help push the team's win streak to three.
Reading broke through on the spirited Jackals 11:06 into the first period when Olivier Labelle uncorked a rocket from deep on the right wing side that goaltender Jason Kasdorf kicked out with the right pad. Unfortunately for him, however, he kicked the puck directly to the low slot, where Goulbourne, who was charging down the left wing side, completed the perfectly executed pass off pad for his eighth of the year-and what would prove to be his second GWG of the year.
The Royals tacked on a power play insurance goal forty-eight seconds into the third when Robbie Czarnik slipped a cross-slot feed to a waiting Penny in the right circle. Just as the puck arrived to Penny, the puck appeared to stand up on end, but that didn't slow Penny's one-time rocket which zipped by Kasdorf on the short-side for his seventeenth of the year-and third in his last four games.
Throughout the game, Dekanich was excellent for the Royals, as the Jackals attacked with passion for the entire sixty minutes. Dekanich responded with a poised and athletic performance, sealing off on any number of multi-shot opportunities from in tight to record his eighteenth regular season shutout as a pro.
