
Jackals gain ground on Cutters in big win

Little Falls, NJ- The New Jersey Jackals crushed the Aces behind two bombs from Chris Rowan and eight innings of shutout ball by Jackson Crowther.
With the victory and the New Haven loss, the Jackals crept closer to the Cutters in the South Division race. New Jersey is now only one and a half games out, with four more games to go before the half.
It was déjà vu for the Jackals in the top of the second. On this occasion, Aces' starter Steve Emmerthal simply could not find the plate. Emmerthal walked in three runs, with another run coming in on an error at short stop. He was driven out of the ballgame after one and a third innings of work.
Chris Rowan crushed his team leading seventh homerun of the year in the top of the third, a solo shot, making it a 5-0 New Jersey lead.
New Jersey would make it 8-0 in the top of the fourth. Kevin Grijak doubled with the bases loaded, scoring two, and Wilton Veras grounded out, scoring one more.
A sacrifice fly by Alberto Vasquez with the bases loaded, in the top of the seventh, scored Veras, gave the Jackals a 9-0 lead.
A two run homerun by Chris Rowan, his second of the ballgame, made it 11-0 New Jersey.
The Aces picked up their lone run in the bottom of the ninth, on an RBI single by Stephen Larkin.
Aces starter Steve Emmerthal suffered from control problems, while only lasing one and one third innings. He gave up one hit, walked six, and was credited with four runs, three of them being earned. He was the loser.
Jackson Crowther pitched a sensational eight innings for the Jackals, while giving up only two hits, and striking out three.
Jutt Hileman was 2-3 for the Aces with two singles.
For the Jackals, Chris Rowan went 2-4 with two homeruns and three RBI. Kevin Grijak was also 1-4 with a double and two runs batted in.
The Jackals will be sending two players to the Northeast League All-Star Game, on July 20, 2004. This year's All-Star Game will be played in Ft. Worth Texas, against the All-Stars of the Central League. Outfielder Wady Almonte and third baseman Wilton Veras were both chosen by Northeast League coaches and media to represent the Jackals in this year's contest.
The New Jersey Jackals start another home series on Monday, July 12, 2004, when the Elmira Pioneers come to Yogi Berra Stadium for the first time in the regular season. It will be a doubleheader, due to a rainout in Elmira last Wednesday. Both games are scheduled for seven innings, with a 5:05 p.m. start time. It is a Baseball Bingo Monday.
