Jackals Fall in Season Finale, 5-3

ELMIRA, NY - The Elmira Jackals ended their 2014-15 season with an exciting battle at First Arena against the Wheeling Nailers. Jacob MacDonald scored his first professional goal, and Ryan Rashid and Lucas Bloodoff scored as well, but the Jackals dropped their final game of the season 5-3.

The Jackals jumped ahead first at 17:03 of the first period with Jacob MacDonald's first professional goal. The Cornell University product buried a backdoor feed from Mitch Holmberg to give the Jackals a 1-0 lead in the opening stanza. Trevor Gerling added an assist as well. Also in the first period, Travis Fullerton left the game with an injury and emergency backup goaltender Nick Niedert entered the contest.

In the second period, the Nailers knotted the game 1-1 with David Gilbert's 17th goal of the season. Derek Army and Sahir Gill added the helpers. Wheeling took the lead less than two minutes later as former Jackal Chaz Johnson scored his 18th goal of the season at 5:05 of the middle stanza. Zack Torquato and Riley Brace earned the assists on Johnson's go-ahead goal. However, the Jackals battled back less than two minutes later with Ryan Rashid's 16th goal of the season at 6:45 of the second period. Trevor Gerling and Joe Houk added the assists on Rashid's tying marker. The Nailers would retake the lead at 18:03 of the second period when Paul Cianfrini recorded his second goal of the season. Adam Krause and Riley Brace added the assists.

The Jackals battled back in the third period and tied the game 3-3 with Lucas Bloodoff's redirect at 14:35 of the final frame of regulation. Nick Tuzzolino and Mike Bergin assisted Bloodoff's 11th goal of the season. However, less than a minute later, the Nailers would capture the lead once again with Adam Krause's second professional goal at 15:07 of the third period. Tyler Fernandez added an empty-net goal to seal the Nailers' win and clinch a Kelly Cup playoff berth for Wheeling.

Travis Fullerton did not face any shots prior to leaving the contest and Nick Niedert stopped 37 of 42 shots faced, but suffered the loss. Franky Palazzese stopped 25 of 28 for the victory. The Jackals went 0-for-4 on the power-play and the Nailers went 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
