Jackals Fall 11-5 after Relinquishing Lead
May 27, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release
The Jackals led 5-1, but that was before the Saltdogs responded with ten unanswered runs to win 11-5.
Nick Giarraputo boosted his average to .517 (15-29) with a three-run home run in the first, but the top of the sixth featured tonight's turning point. With Jackals 1B Steve Caseres on first, C Jeff Lanning singled to right-center field. The center fielder Mike Provencher connected with his 2B Brad Payne who threw a bulls-eye to C Alan Rick. Rick's tag on Caseres was in time, holding the Jackals' lead at 5-2.
Yesterday's hero 1B John Alonso hit the first of his two two-run home runs in the bottom of the frame, cutting the lead to one.
After Mike Provencher tied the score on a single in the seventh, Jeff Gogal's throw on a Joe Spiers' sacrifice bunt got away from 3B Nick Giarraputo, scoring both runners on base.
After two more runs in the seventh, John Alonso's second home run in the eighth cemented the scoring at 11-5.
Jeff Gogal (0-1) takes the loss, while Tony Butler receives the win in his first Saltdogs appearance. Lincoln acquired Butler after they released former Jackal and major leaguer D'Angelo Jimenez before today's game.
After starting the mid-west trip 4-1, the Jackals will head back to Little Falls with a 5-5 mark. They'll take the travel day tomorrow before playing their home opener Tuesday at 7:05 ET. Fittingly, eight-year veteran Isaac Pavlik (1-0, 3.00 ERA) will open the Jackals home season. He's one complete game and 15 strikeouts away from tying the Jackals all-time records.
The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2011 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
