Duluth, Ga. - The Elmira Jackals (26-13-1-0) fell to the Gwinnett Gladiators (21-12-7-3) on Thursday night at The Arena at Gwinnett Center, 4-3. Elmira's three-game winning streak came to an end in the loss.
Bryan Brutlag backhanded a puck in on the doorstep on Gwinnett's first power-play, taking a feed from Justin Milo and pushing it in to give the Gladiators a 1-0 advantage at 4:56.
Nikita Kashirsky tipped in a centering pass by Tyler Murovich, giving the Gladiators another power-play tally at 7:34 of the opening frame, making it 2-0.
The Jackals went on their first two power plays of the contest minutes later, and took advantage of the latter attempt. Louie Caporusso pushed a puck in front from the right goal line, and with Dustin Gazley and Josh Brittain jamming away at the puck, Gazley was able to knock it in past Gladiators netminder Jeff Jakaitis, bringing Elmira to within a goal, 2-1, at 11:35.
Caporusso tipped in a Gazley feed in the left circle past Jakaitis, evening the score, 2-2, 2:42 into the second.
A pair of Gladiator goals put Gwinnett up by two entering the third period. Dallas Jackson snuck in backdoor and tapped home a feed at 9:48 for Gwinnett's third power-play goal, while Pat Galivan tipped in a shot by Jackson at 19:30, giving the Gladiators a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes.
Craig Rivet buried a centering feed by Gazley at 15:08 of the final frame, as the veteran recorded his second goal as a Jackal to make it a one-goal contest, 4-3.
Jakaitis made 22 saves in the victory, earning his 15th victory of the season. Elmira netminder Timo Pielmeier stopped 22 shots, suffering his sixth defeat of the season.
The Jackals meet the Gladiators on Saturday night and then head to South Carolina to battle the Stingrays on Sunday.
