New Jersey Jackals News Release
The New Jersey Jackals defeated Worcester 5-1 and avoided a four-game sweep at Yogi Berra Stadium on June 4.
Joe Orloski (1-1) allowed just four hits and an earned run in seven innings while Jared Thomas recorded the last six outs for his second save of the season. Orloski stamped his mark on the series before the Quebec Le Capitales visit the stadium on June 5.
In the top of the fifth the Jackals (3-6) were down 1-0. The inning continued longer than the Tornadoes had hoped, however, with untimely errors by Tornadoes shortstop, Bob Tewksbary and third baseman, Zach Strong. The inning was fueled by a two-run inning led by an infield single by Nesbit and another single by Tuttle. Both Jackals benefited and scored after the two mishaps from the Tornadoes.
Bill Peavey went 2-for-4 with a 2-run HR in the eighth inning that sailed over the right-field fence. Peavey's shot capped a three-run eighth that boosted the Jackals lead to 5-1. Smithlin started the inning with a bunt single, and after a second error by Strong, Veras reached base and later scored on the Peavey homerun.
The Tornadoes (8-3) got a solid performance from its starting pitcher, D.J. Mattox. However, Mattox was taken out after just three innings despite giving up just one hit and no earned runs.
Mike Meagher (0-1) pitched two innings of relief and allowed two runs on three hits.
