The Elmira Jackals fell to the Kalamazoo Wings on Saturday night 4-1 at First Arena in Elmira, N.Y., as the K-Wings took the first meeting between the two teams in ECHL play in front of a crowd of 3,791, Elmira's league-leading 13th sellout of 2009-2010.
Kalamazoo took a 1-0 lead at 11:30 of the first period when Trent Daavettila sent in a rebound past Elmira goaltender Andy Chiodo for the early advantage.
Chaz Johnson tied the game late in the first period, wristing a puck off a faceoff past K-Wings goaltender Ryan Nie at 18:20, with the assist going to Chris Korchinski who had won the draw.
In the second period, Tom Morrow's straightaway drive from the blue line beat Chiodo glove side at 1:53 to give Kalamazoo the lead for good.
Jon A. Landry added a goal at 7:11 of the third period after Patrick Asselin dropped the puck back to him in the slot and his wrist shot found the back of the net to make it 3-1.
Dean Strong's empty-net goal at 18:13 sealed the game for the K-Wings.
Chiodo fell to 5-2-0-0 with the Jackals, stopping 17 of 20 shots, while Nie recorded his 21st win of the season to tie for the league lead, making 23 saves on 24 shots.
