Jackals Clipped By K-Wings, 4-1

The Elmira Jackals fell to the Kalamazoo Wings on Saturday night 4-1 at First Arena in Elmira, N.Y., as the K-Wings took the first meeting between the two teams in ECHL play in front of a crowd of 3,791, Elmira's league-leading 13th sellout of 2009-2010.

Kalamazoo took a 1-0 lead at 11:30 of the first period when Trent Daavettila sent in a rebound past Elmira goaltender Andy Chiodo for the early advantage.

Chaz Johnson tied the game late in the first period, wristing a puck off a faceoff past K-Wings goaltender Ryan Nie at 18:20, with the assist going to Chris Korchinski who had won the draw.

In the second period, Tom Morrow's straightaway drive from the blue line beat Chiodo glove side at 1:53 to give Kalamazoo the lead for good.

Jon A. Landry added a goal at 7:11 of the third period after Patrick Asselin dropped the puck back to him in the slot and his wrist shot found the back of the net to make it 3-1.

Dean Strong's empty-net goal at 18:13 sealed the game for the K-Wings.

Chiodo fell to 5-2-0-0 with the Jackals, stopping 17 of 20 shots, while Nie recorded his 21st win of the season to tie for the league lead, making 23 saves on 24 shots.

The Jackals' record dropped to 32-20-3-2 while the K-Wings improved to 34-17-4-3.

Elmira is at Johnstown on Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
