Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Stockton, CA - In a Friday evening matchup the Victoria Salmon Kings and Stockton Thunder met in the second of a three-game set at the Stockton Arena. Victoria's Glenn Fisher got the start in net while Stockton countered with Aaron Sorochan.
Victoria opened the scoring at the 4:22 mark when Bryan Leitch put a shot on net along the goal line that banked off Sorochan and into the net. For Leitch it was his seventh goal of the season and first as a Salmon King. Gary Gladue extended Victoria's lead to 2-0 at 8:38 when he fired a shot from the left faceoff circle that beat the Thunder goaltender for his third marker of the campaign. Stockton hit the scoreboard with four minutes remaining in the frame on a shorthanded goal off the stick of Garet Hunt. The Thunder forward streaked down the right wing and fired a wrist shot on net that eluded Fisher for his fifth goal of the season. Victoria regained their two goal advantage at 17:58 to round out the scoring for the period. Dirk Southern put a shot on goal from the left faceoff circle that Sorochan kicked to his left to an open Wes Goldie. The Salmon Kings' captain buried the puck into the net for his league-leading 39th marker of the campaign. Victoria took their 3-1 lead into the first intermission.
The Salmon Kings registered the lone goal of the second period on the power play at 10:10. Chad Painchaud controlled the puck in the right faceoff circle and snapped a shot that beat Sorochan for his 24th goal of the year. Painchaud's marker gave Victoria a 4-1 advantage heading into the third period.
Stockton scored their second goal of the game 1:15 into the third period on Oren Eizenman's 16th marker of the year. On a offensive rush Colin Hemingway fired the puck on net from the left wing with Fisher making the initial save. The rebound bounced to Eizenman who knocked the puck out of the air past the Salmon Kings' goalkeeper. Kelly Czuy made it a one-goal game at the 6:23 mark when he curled out of the left wing corner into the faceoff circle and fired a wrist shot past the blocker of Fisher. Czuy's goal was his third of the season. The Victoria netminder maintained the visitor's one goal edge at 11:08 when he made a right pad save on a J.F. Caudron penalty shot. Randall Gelech secured the victory with an empty-net goal at 19:08. Salmon Kings 5 Thunder 3.
Victoria went 1/4 25.0% on the power play while Stockton was 0/2 0.0%. The Thunder outshot the Salmon Kings 37-34.
