Can-Am New Jersey Jackals

Jackals Clinch Final Playoff Spot With Win Over Rockland

August 24, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release

The New Jersey Jackals will play the Quebec Capitales in the 2012 Canadian-American League Championship series.

By defeating the Rockland Boulders 5-2 on a calm Friday in Pomona, the Jackals punch their ticket to a rematch of the 2011 championship series, one in which they would lose in four games to those Capitales.

Kyle Greenwalt squiggled out of trouble a few times today, but ended with an aesthetically pleasing final line: 6 IP, ER, 5 H, 4 K. He earns the win and improves to 8-3. Jeff Gogal and Jake Hale combined for three innings of one-run ball.

Pat Moran goes the distance but earns the loss. Behind three Boulders errors, the Maine native allowed five runs, one earned, in the full nine innings. He drops to 4-7 this year.

With runners on first and third in the Jackals half of the first, Angel Berroa kept a line drive fair down the left field line for his 16th home run of the year. It put New Jersey up 3-0 early.

Ryan Mollica's leadoff home run an inning later would be Rockland's only offense until the ninth inning.

Up 3-1 at that point, the Jackals came right back with two runs in the third. Doubles by Bryan Sabatella and Berroa highlighted the two-run second to put New Jersey up 5-1. In the DH spot for the first time this year, Sabatella was 3-4 with a run scored. Berroa was 2-4 with the home run, double, and four RBIs.

Jackals center fielder Chris Curran was 1-4 with a run scored in his first game since he was placed on the DL August 1st.

Orlando Mercado highlighted Rockland's offense. The right fielder was 2-3 with a walk.

The loss give the Boulders a Can-Am high 11 straight. Their last win was August 11th against the Jackals.

With the win the Jackals improve to 54-38, five-and-a-half games behind the Capitales with eight games to play. The Boulders drop to 43-48.

Tomorrow, the Jackals call on newcomer Mike Ness (1-0, 2.57). The former Newark Bears ace will oppose fellow righty Bobby Blevins (8-8, 3.75). First pitch is 7:05. The pregame starts 10 minutes prior.

The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2012 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
