Elmira Jackals News Release

ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals were unable to pick up their third consecutive win on Friday night. They fell at First Arena to the Kalamazoo Wings by a 5-3 score. The loss dipped Elmira's record to 24-19-4 on the season.

The first time the Jackals and Wings met this season in mid-January goalies Maxime Clermont and Joel Martin stole the show with a combined 83 saves. Tonight the offenses matched their production from that entire game with three first period goals. The Jackals were left behind by one at the intermission, however, as the Wings tallied a pair wrapped around the Jackals' strike on the power play. Alex Mallet opened the scoring 3:20 in with his eighth goal of the season. Elmira's response was a deflection goal by Kevin Harvey on the power play at 8:57. Cameron Cooper took the shot from the point and earned his first point as a Jackal. Just after the expiration of a Jackals penalty Elgin Reid scored his first of the night, eighth overall, with a slap shot from the left point. The shot appeared to deflect off of a body in front past Elmira goalie Maxime Clermont. At the other end Kalamazoo's Joel Martin stopped seven of eight.

Elmira's power play was dialed in early in the second period as it produced the tying goal once again. With the puck on edge at the center point, Jordon Southorn hammered a low slap shot past Martin for his sixth goal of the season. Andrew Rowe and Jean Bourbeau provided the helpers. Kalamazoo answered back, though, with Tyler Shelast pouncing on a rebound and lifting a wrist shot past Clermont 58 seconds after Southorn's goal. The Wings stretched their lead to two at 14:19 of the second on a shorthanded strike by Reid. Clermont turned away eight of the 10 shots he faced in the stanza, but Martin was one better to keep Kalamazoo up by two heading to the third.

In the final frame, Elmira's offense stepped it into high gear and tested Martin 23 times. It was the most shots Elmira took in a single period this season. Despite their best efforts the Jackals could only dent the net once and failed to pull off a dramatic comeback for the second straight game. Jordan Pietrus sent a wrist shot on from the left wing that bounced airborne and into the net. The goal was initially waved off on a high stick, but after a conference between the officials it was ruled a good goal. With just under 2:30 to play the Jackals went to work with Clermont pulled for the extra attacker. Kalamazoo was the only team to hit the net before the final horn, though, when Sam Ftorek scored into the empty net with a minute remaining.

Clermont shouldered the loss while stopping 20 of 24 shots. Elmira ended the night 2-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
