New Jersey Jackals News Release

In the finale of a three-game set, the Can-Am League's leading offense got the better of the Newark Bears once more, as the Jackals worked around three Newark solo home runs to 10-6 victory on Sunday.

Amidst the humidy at Yogi Berra Stadium, Jackals' starter Steve Fox remained hot, striking out eight batters over six innings. He allowed six runs, five earned, on eight hits including the aforementioned solo home runs. Fox is now tied for the Can-Am lead in wins and strikeouts with 10 and 100, respectively.

Newark starter Julian Sampson did not make it out of the second inning. The right-hander allowed five runs on five hits over an inning-and-two-thirds. The Bears' mid-season acquisition now drops to 3-8 on the season and 0-5 with Newark.

Hitting .298 as a team entering Sunday, the Can-Am's best offense scored in each of the first five innings. Propelled by a four-run second inning and three-run third, the Jackals scored a run in each of the first, fourth, and fifth innings.

New Jersey's seven thru nine hitters were 9-12 with a home run, six RBIs, three doubles, a triple, and five runs.

From the seven-spot, Carlos Guzman finished a home run shy of the cycle in his 3-4 day.

Hitting eighth, shortstop Matt Nandin was 4-5 with a double and an RBI.

Nine-hole catcher Chris Henderson added his second home run of the season and a two-run double in his 2-3 day.

After an unearned run in the first, Fox would allow solo home runs to Dan Coury, Tucker Nathans, and D'Angelo Jimenez. The Bears got two more in the sixth off by RBI doubles by Glen Johnson and Bryce Lane.

With the win, the Jackals are now 44-30 on the season while the Bears drop to 22-53. Because the Quebec Capitales defeated the Worcester Tornadoes earlier in the day, New Jersey remains four games back of first place. Newark drops to 23-51.

The Jackals continue their six-game home stand tomorrow evening when the Worcester Tornadoes return to Little Falls. Lefty Dustin Birosak (3-2, 4.54) heads to the mound for New Jersey. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The pregame begins 10 minutes prior.

The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2012 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
