Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa - Waterloo Black Hawks veteran Jack Spicer won twice over the weekend, then claimed his second USHL Goaltender of the Week Award of 2023/24 on Monday.
Spicer's performances bookended a three-win sequence from Friday through Sunday. With the 19-year-old in the crease to open the weekend, Waterloo topped the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders 3-1 on the road. Then Sunday at Young Arena, Spicer provided another fine performance as the Hawks defeated the Tri-City Storm 7-1. Each matchup included a signature save. In Cedar Rapids, Spicer denied Ben Muthersbaugh's breakaway less than a minute after the Hawks had tied the game in the third period. Then Sunday, the netminder's fully-extended lunge allowed him to get his goal stick on a shot by former teammate Zach Bade.
In total, Spicer stopped 47 of the 49 shots he faced during the two games. He made 21 saves versus the RoughRiders, allowing the Hawks to come back from a 1-0 second intermission deficit. It was just the third time this season Waterloo has won when trailing after two periods. Sunday, the Hawks' provided plenty of offensive support as Spicer made 26 saves. It was a clutch win for both the team and the goalie, allowing Waterloo to close within one point of the Sioux City Musketeers for second place in the USHL Western Conference, as well as clinching a Clark Cup playoff bid.
Spicer is now 13-11-1 this season. Twelve of his victories have been recorded since Christmas. The Rockville, Maryland, native has a 3.14 goals-against average, while establishing a .887 save percentage. On February 18th, he won his fourth shootout of the season when the Hawks hosted the Youngstown Phantoms. No USHL goalie has more shootout wins during 2023/24.
Adding Spicer's 2023/24 efforts to his rookie campaign, the goalie has appeared in 60 regular season games with an overall mark of 34-22-2. Spicer ranks seventh on Waterloo's junior-era victory list. He is currently two behind C.J. Motte and three shy of equaling Jared Moe. After claiming the USHL Goaltender of the Week title once in 2022/23, Monday's weekly award represents the third during his league career.
Spicer is the sixth netminder with multiple Goalie of the Week awards this season. He is the second Black Hawk to earn a player of the week honor twice. John Mustard has made two appearances as the USHL Forward of the Week. Jakub Altrichter was also named Forward of the Week once in 2023/24.
This weekend, the Black Hawks go on the road to visit the league-leading Fargo Force on Friday and Saturday.
