Izaac Garsez Selected in MLB 1st Year Players Draft
June 6, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Boise Hawks News Release
College of Idaho outfielder Izaac Garsez was selected today by the Chicago Cubs, with the 914th pick in the 30th Round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft.
The two-time NAIA All-American and two-time NAIA West Player of the Year hit .389 as a senior, with eight home runs and 53 RBI, leading the NAIA with a school-record 12 triples. He added 20 doubles, 29 stolen bases on the season, leading the NAIA West with 93 hits and 75 runs scored. He was recommended by Cubs area scout, Al Geddes.
Garsez becomes the first C of I player to be drafted by an MLB club since Jason Stefani was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 30th Round of the 2001 MLB Draft. He is the tenth player in program history to be drafted - with the highest draft pick being Don Bellum in the eighth round by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1992.
Once signed, Garsez will report to the Cubs training site in Mesa, Ariz., and be assigned to one of their minor league affiliates - including the short-season Boise Hawks.
