D-Backs Conclude MLB Draft

June 6, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Yakima Bears News Release

The MLB First-Year Player's Draft concluded Wednesday and the Yakima Bears parent club, the Arizona Diamondbacks, selected 25 players in addition to the 16 taken on draft's first two days.

In the 38th round Arizona kept things in the family by drafting Cameron Gibson, the son of Diamondbacks' manager Kirk Gibson. The younger Gibson is an outfielder who is finishing his senior year of high school in Michigan.

A pair of Cowboys were selected on the third day, as third baseman Mark Ginther (24th) and right-handed pitcher Chase Stevens (30th) out of Oklahoma State could be teammates once again, this time in the D-backs system.

When the Diamondbacks took senior first baseman Jacob House (20th) out of Texas A&M it was the second player the team drafted from the same Texas high school. Five years ago House graduated from Mansfield Timberview, which is where fourth-round D-backs' pick Chuck Taylor will graduate from this spring.

Among the 40 players selected by the Diamondbacks over the three days were 22 position players, even with seven consecutive pitchers selected between the 30th and 36th rounds on the third day. The most popular positions were centerfielder (6), shortstop (5), and catcher (4). It took until the 23rd round for the D-backs to take a left-handed pitcher, with only three lefty hurlers selected against 15 right-handed pitchers. Other positions included two first basemen, two third basemen, one second baseman, and two outfielders not listed as centerfielders. The D-backs took 14 high school seniors and 26 players from colleges.

Many of the players drafted will be reporting to Yakima June 13 for a summer with the Bears. The club looks to have its roster set by June 14.

A full list of the Diamondbacks players drafted can be found on the next page.

The Yakima Bears begin the season June 15 in Eugene and will play at home for the first time on June 20. Season tickets and mini plans are on sale now at the downtown Bears office at 17 N. 3rd Street, Suite 101 and online at yakimabears.com.
