Italiano, Cougars Even Set with L'Kings

GENEVA, IL. - Craig Italiano pitched five strong innings and Greg Dowling cracked a pair of doubles and drove in two Saturday night as the Kane County Cougars beat the Clinton LumberKings, 6-4, in front of 5,872 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. The Cougars evened the three-game set and are back to within two games of the first-place L'Kings.
Dowling's first double came in the bottom of the first against Ryan Tatusko (0-1) with the bases loaded, as it scored Shane Keough and newcomer Adam Klein for a 2-0 game. The LumberKings got a pair of unearned runs against Italiano in the third to make it 2-2, but the Cougars put him in line for the win by scoring two of their own in the last of the fifth. Klein had an RBI infield single, and Keough scored on a wild pitch. Italiano (3-0), who has given up one earned in his last five outings (25 innings), left after five frames. He gave up three hits, walked two and fanned four.
Reliever Lance Sewell, who joined the team Friday from extended spring training, gave up one run in his one-inning stint, but the Cougars countered with two in the eighth thanks to an error and a Larry Cobb single. Scott Moore ceded an unearned tally in the top of the ninth before Nick Walters recorded the final out for his first save.
The Cougars (18-9) and L'Kings (19-6) conclude their three-game set Sunday afternoon at 1 CT when Jamie Richmond (2-1, 3.70) faces Derek Holland (1-0, 2.79). That will end the Cougars' nine-game homestand during which they've have gone 3-5 so far.
