
Slide reaches three as Kernels fall to Fort Wayne, 10-9

The Fort Wayne Wizards took advantage of five unearned runs and drew 12 walks in a 10-9 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Saturday afternoon in Fort Wayne.
Jay Brossman was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and Anel De Los Santos was 3 for 3 with an RBI as the Kernels had 10 hits on the day, but only a double by Tyler Johnson going for extra bases. Efren Navarro was 1 for 2 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored and Andrew Romine was 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. Romine's swipes tied him with Jeremy Moore for the team lead with 15.
Kernels starter Jordan Walden allowed two runs on five hits over four innings in a no-decision effort. Walden struck out two and walked three. Ysmael Carmona (0-1) was the pitcher of record as he gave up three unearned runs and issued three walks over 2/3 of an inning.
Matt Teague (3-1) gave up two runs on four hits over three innings to pick up the win in relief of starter Jeremy McBryde. Tyler Davis gave up a hit and an unearned run over an inning to earn his second save.
The loss is the Kernels third in a row and drops their first half record to 14-13. Fort Wayne improves to 13-15.
The Kernels look to avoid the sweep on Sunday afternoon as Michael Anton starts for the Kernels against Robert Woodard for Fort Wayne. Game time is 1 pm and the game can be heard on the internet at www.kernels.com, or in eastern Iowa on 1450 KMRY.
Cedar Rapids returns to Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field on Monday, May 5th to start a three game series with the Peoria Chiefs and their hall of fame manager, Ryne Sandberg. This will be the only time during the 2008 regular season that the Chiefs come to Cedar Rapids.
