Cougars Latest Roster Addition Led A's System In Stolen Bases Last Season

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, have announced that outfielder Adam Klein has been added to the Cougars roster from extended spring training. Kane County infielder Michael Richard has been placed on the disabled list with a bone spur in his right thumb that will likely require surgery. Klein has arrived in Chicago and is active for tonight's 5 p.m. home game against the Clinton Lumberkings at Elfstrom Stadium.
Recognized as a speedy lefthander with a good eye at the plate, Klein breaks in with the Cougars as a 48th round selection by Oakland in last June's draft. Upon signing with the A's last year, Klein played with Oakland's rookie league squad and batted .263 with 58 walks in just 45 games. Klein also swiped 33 bases, which was the most among the A's entire farm system in 2007.
Klein attended California State University Los Angeles and played two seasons for the Golden Eagles. In 2007, Klein's final collegiate season, the 24-year old led all of Division II in walks with 69 and led his team with a .498 on-base percentage.
Richard (11th round, 2007) moves to the disabled list after playing in 11 games, all at shortstop, for manager Aaron Nieckula's squad. The 23-year old batted .235 with three RBIs and five stolen bases.
The Cougars' active roster remains at 25 players as mandated by the Midwest League. The team continues a weekend series this evening with a 5 p.m. contest against the first-place Clinton Lumberkings. Clinton currently holds the top spot in the league's Western Division and leads second-place Kane County by three games. Cougars starter Craig Italiano (2-0, 1.50) takes the bump and is opposed by the Lumberkings' Jorge Quintero (2-0, 3.52).
