D.C. United News Release
CHANTILLY, VA (September 23, 2003)- With a bevy of celebrities in tow, space is limited for the Second Annual United for D.C. Celebrity Golf Tournament Monday, September 29th at Reston National Golf Course. A shotgun start is planned for 8:30 a.m. with an awards luncheon concluding the event at 1:30 p.m. Few single-person ($195) and four-member ($695) slots are still open, giving United fans and those interested in helping a good cause a unique opportunity to mix and mingle with United players and staff as well as other local celebrities. Head Coach Ray Hudson and executive Kevin Payne are expected to make appearances, as are current and former United players Ryan Nelsen, Hristo Stoitchkov, Mike Petke, Earnie Stewart, John Harkes, Geoff Aunger, Curt Onalfo, Mark Simpson, Mike Amman and Kris Kelderman. Also stepping onto the greens will be Comcast SportsNet's Dave Johnson, the voice of D.C. United soccer, and Russ Thaler, DC 101's Greg Roche, WBIG's Gary Murphy, WRC-TV Channel 4's Jill Sorenson and U.S. National Team Coach Bruce Arena.
"We look forward to hosting a wonderful day on a beautiful golf course for all of the tournament's sponsors, golfers, and celebrities," said Catherine Marquette, Executive Director of United for D.C. and D.C. United Director of Community and Fan Relations. "We appreciate everyone's overwhelming support and are on target to well-surpass the over $20,000 we raised last year from the event.
Several key sponsors have expanded upon the excitement generated from last year's inaugural event. Returning sponsors Dunkin' Donuts, Pepsi and Budweiser will be joined by Outback Steakhouse to provide the food and beverages for the golfers. Honda has presented a 2004 Honda Accord for a hole-in-one contest. The U.S. Soccer Foundation and Price Waterhouse Coopers are also sponsoring the event. Numerous prizes have been donated by a variety of organizations as raffle and silent auction items, including a Michael Vick autographed Atlanta Falcons football, a team autographed D.C. United replica jersey and a golf and hotel package at Westfields Signature Fred Couples Golf Course, as well as Taylor Made putters and specialty made golf chimes for overall team prizes. Mulligans will also be for sale during registration.
