ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico -- Gerald Williams finished a single short of the cycle and drove in two runs to help the Albuquerque Isotopes defeat the New Orleans Zephyrs, 8-5 on Thursday Night in Albuquerque.
Williams, who recorded a cycle on July 24 against the Zephyrs, hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning, doubled during a two-run rally in the sixth and tripled and scored in the eighth to account for the final margin. Abraham Nunez added a solo homer, his third long ball in his last five outings for Albuquerque, which has won five straight and 17 of its last 22. Ozwaldo Mairena (6-2) threw a scoreless inning for the win and Blaine Neal blanked New Orleans in the ninth to grab his 15th save.
Dave Matranga hit a two-run double in the second inning, Jason Lane added a two-run homer and Mike Moriarty struck a fifth inning solo shot for the Zephyrs, who dropped their third straight game against the Isotopes despite jumping out to a 5-1 lead. Miguel Saladin (5-6) gave up two runs and three hits in 2/3 inning to absorb the loss. Colorado Springs defeated the Nashville Sounds 12 to 7 on Thursday so the Zephyrs remained 5 ½ games back of Nashville in the PCL Eastern Division.
The series with the Isotopes continues on Friday at 8:11 PM. The game can be heard on WTIX-AM 690 and at www.zephyrsbaseball.com with Tim Grubbs calling the action.
