Nashville Sounds News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS -- It was "Two Home Run Night" at Sky Sox Stadium on Thursday evening, but the Nashville Sounds came up on the short end of a 12-7 decision against Colorado Springs in the opener of a five-game series between the clubs.
Nashville catcher Blake Barthol, who became the first Sounds player not named J.J. Davis to register a two-dinger game this season, joined Colorado Springs outfielder Mark Sweeney and rehabbing Sky Sox infielder Mark Bellhorn by blasting a pair of roundtrippers in the contest.
The Sounds maintained their 5 1/2 game lead in the PCL East Division despite the loss, as all four division clubs were defeated on the evening.
Sweeney, who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and tallied a season-high seven RBI for the Sky Sox, blasted a grand slam off Sounds reliever Mike Holtz to highlight the offensive fireworks for Colorado Springs, which posted a double-digit run total against Nashville for the second consecutive game. Bellhorn, in his first game of a rehab assignment with the Rockies' Triple-A affiliate, turned in a 2-for-4, five RBI performance.
Barthol finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, Mike Gulan drove in three runs for the Sounds, and John Barnes, Davis, and Aaron Holbert all turned in two-hit efforts in the losing effort.
Colorado Springs starter Randy Flores (8-6) picked up the victory after allowing five runs and striking out seven in his six innings of work, while Nashville starter Justin Reid (3-5) took the loss after allowing 11 runs (seven earned) on eight hits in just 3 1/3 innings.
Reliever Jim Mann tossed a scoreless inning in his first game with the Sounds since being outrighted from Pittsburgh over the weekend.
The teams meet again for game two of the five-game set at 8:05 CDT Friday evening. Left-hander Dave Williams (5-2, 3.51) takes the hill for Nashville. He is scheduled to face Sky Sox right-hander Chris Gissell (5-3, 3.51).
