Isotopes at RedHawks

June 1, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Oklahoma City Comets News Release

TODAY:

Omar Poveda gets the starting assignment for the RedHawks in his Triple-A debut in the fifth and final game of a series with the Albuquerque Isotopes (Los Angeles Dodgers). Poveda, a 21-year-old righthander from Venezuela, was 5-3 with a 3.10 ERA for Double-A Frisco this season in his debut at that level. A victory today would give the RedHawks their second series win of the season. OKC is 2-2 during this series and homestand, with Memphis coming to town to begin a 4-game set tomorrow. The RedHawks are third in the American South Division, 3.5 games back of divison-leading Albuquerque and 1 game behind second-place Round Rock. Righthander Charlie Haeger gets the start for the Isotopes. Haeger earned a win against the RedHawks in his only other career appearance against them May 6 at The Brick, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits in 5.2 innings.

ISOTOPES HIT 3 HOMERS IN 8-3 WIN:

Hector Luna hit a pair of home runs and Dee Brown added another as Albuquerque beat the RedHawks on Sunday 8-3 to square the series at 2-2. Luna hit a 2-run shot in the sixth off reliever Elizardo Ramirez and added an inside-the-park homer off Mike Hinckley in the ninth on a play that caused center fielder Julio Borbon to leave the game after diving for the line drive. OKC starter Neftali Feliz (2-3) allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in 4 innings (85 pitches) with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts to take the loss as Albuquerque out-hit OKC 12-7. Giancarlo Alvarado (3-4) went 6 innings for the win, allowing all 3 OKC runs.

HOMERS:

OKC pitching has allowed 4 home runs in the last 2 games after not surrendering any in the previous 12 games from May 18-29. The RedHawks have still allowed the fewest home runs (27) in the league, one fewer than Memphis. Yesterday's 3 home runs allowed match the most given up in a game by the RedHawks this season, joining May 6 vs. Albuquerque and May 10 at Round Rock. RedHawks hitters have the PCL's fewest home runs (20). Nate Gold has both of OKC's home runs (May 25 and May 28) in the past 9 games.

MAY DAYS:

The RedHawks finished May with a 12-18 record, 4.92 team ERA and .258 average. Fresno had the league's best month with a 21-8 record, while Omaha checked in last at 11-20, just ahead of OKC and New Orleans, which was also 12-18. The RedHawks began the month a half-game back of the division lead and sit 3.5 games back today.

TRANSACTION RECAP:
