PCL Names Players of the Week
June 1, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Pacific Coast League today announced John Bowker of the Fresno Grizzlies has been named PCL Player of the Week and Yorman Bazardo PCL Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 25th-May 31st.
Bowker was 14-for-26 (.538) with two doubles, two home runs, and seven RBI and helped the Grizzlies go 5-2 for the week. The Sacramento native is hitting .338 (9th in the PCL) with four home runs, ten doubles, and 29 RBI on the season. He was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2004 MLB draft out of Long Beach State University. The Grizzlies have won 5 straight games and are currently in second place (28-22) in the PCL Pacific Southern division.
Bazardo, a native of Venezuela was dominant last week in his two starts. In his first start on Tuesday he tossed eight scoreless innings against Salt Lake and allowed three hits and struck out six to earn the decision. In his next start on Sunday against New Orleans, Yorman threw a complete game shutout and allowed two hits and struck out six to earn his second win of the week. In his last five starts Bazardo has been lights out for the Express going 4-0 with 37.0 innings pitched, three earned runs allowed, and 24 strikeouts. He is 6-2 with a 2.59 ERA (5th in the PCL) on the season. He was signed by the Astros as a minor league free agent before the 2009 season.
Beginning Friday, June 5th fans can vote online for their favorite PCL players to play in the 2009 Triple-A All-Star Game to be held July 15th in Portland, Oregon. All-Star Game information can be found on the official Pacific Coast League website (www.pclbaseball.com).
