Isles Travel to Cape Breton with More Momentum Than Ever
March 13, 2021 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release
It's a tale of two teams trending in opposite directions. One is looking to keep their seven-game winning streak rolling. The other is looking to right the ship after allowing the most goals in a game this season.
The Charlottetown Islanders and Cape Breton Eagles are certainly not on the same path at this time; however, anything can happen in the Maritime Division.
The Islanders (22-4-0-0) overcame another evening of penalty trouble Tuesday night to take down the Halifax Mooseheads 5-2 for their seventh consecutive victory. It's the longest winning streak of the season for Charlottetown and the third-longest winning streak in the QMJHL this season.
Once again, it was the top line leading the way as they continue their torrid pace over this past stretch of games. Thomas Casey finished with a goal and three assists while Cedric Desruisseaux and Brett Budgell each added multi-point games of their own. Casey's four point night pulls him in to a tie with Desruisseaux for the league lead in points with 53, while the three assists allowed him to leapfrog Blainville-Boisbriand's Christoper Merisier-Ortiz for first in the QMJHL in that category, now sitting at 29 assists this season. With one more point, Casey will move in to third in Islanders team history in career points.
For all that is good in Charlottetown, Cape Breton isn't faring out the same. The Eagles (11-16-1-0) are losers of four straight games, including an 11-4 thumping at the hands of the Mooseheads on Thursday night. The offensive onslaught from their opponents comes one game after they fell 6-3 at the hands of the Islanders. The Eagles now sit in 15th in the QMJHL standings based off winning percentage to this point in the season.
One bright spot for the Eagles continues to be 18-year-old Dawson Stairs. The Fredericton, NB native has been a star since arriving in Sydney, picking up two more goals in Thursday's defeat and now has points in all but one of his games as an Eagle. He's been strong against Charlottetown this season, having picked up eight points in six games against the Isles as a member of the Eagles and the Saint John Sea Dogs.
Tonight's game can be heard across the airwaves on Ocean 100's Saturday Night Hockey with George Matthews and Cory Arsenault starting at 6:45pm. You can also watch the action on Eastlink Community TV Channel 10/610. Looking for some fun tonight? Head to any of our five viewing partners across Charlottetown to watch the fun!
