Jérémie Poirier was the hero in a 5-4 overtime win over the Moncton Wildcats at the Avenir Centre on Saturday night. Saint John broke out to a 4-1 second period lead before the Wildcats stormed back in the third period. Saint John improves to 7-6-3-1 while Moncton drops to 6-8-1-0 on the season.

Noah Patenaude received his first start of 2021 for Saint John while Dakota Lund-Cornish defended the Wildcats goal.

The first period saw the Sea Dogs heavily outshoot the Wildcats 17-3 but were only able to find twine a single time. Peter Reynolds was at the side of the goal to knock in a Vladislav Kotkov rebound for his fifth of the season giving Saint John the lead heading into the second period.

Back-to-back power play goals from Kotkov and Charlie DesRoches extended the Sea Dogs lead to 3-1 just 3:18 into the second. Moncton responded when Maxim Barabshev scored his first QMJHL goal at 5:33. Fans will remember Maxim's older brother Ivan who played for the Wildcats from 2012-2015 and is now part of the St. Louis Blues.

Before the Wildcats could take advantage of the momentum, Vladislav Kotkov scored his second of the night and third of the season after Josh Lawrence drove hard to the net forcing Dakota Lund-Cornish out of position.

The momentum would eventually swing as a penalty ridden third period put the Sea Dogs behind the eight ball. Maxim Barbashev scored his second of the night, a power play marker, followed by a pair from Jacob Hudson one of which was on the man advantage to erase Saint John's 4-1 lead and send the game to overtime.

In overtime the penalty calls swayed in favor of the Dogs when Moncton was called on back-to-back minor penalties. With 16 seconds to play, Jérémie Poirier hammered home the game winner on a feed from Brady Burns to seal the two points.

This was Ryan Francis' 200th game in the QMJHL. He finished with two assists and continues to lead the Sea Dogs in points with 27.
