Charlottetown Islanders News Release

It was another successful night at home for the Charlottetown Islanders, as they'd win their sixth home game in a row by a score of 5-2 over the Chicoutimi Sagueneens.

The Islanders would kick off the scoring in this game early in the first period, when Brendon Clavelle would find a puck at the point and fire a screaming wrist shot past Sagueneens netminder Alexis Shank. For Clavelle, that's his second goal of the season and third straight game with a point.

Chicoutimi would get that goal back midway through the first with a shorthanded opportunity. After Hunter Drew mishandled a puck at the Sagueneens blueline, Sags forward Zachary Lavigne got on horse and went to the races, speeding down the ice and poking it past Matthew Welsh for his sixth goal of the season.

Following the shorthanded goal, Charlottetown would regain the momentum as the period dwindled closer to it's end. On a 4-on-3 powerplay, Daniel Hardie would extend his point streak to seven games, one-timing a Pierre-Olivier Joseph feed past Shank for his fifteenth goal of the season, tying him with Nathan Legare for the league lead.

The scoring would continue for Charlottetown just 45 seconds later. Forward Will Sirman would bang a few pucks on net before Derek Gentile would sneak in and bury the third rebound past a sprawling Shank for his fourth goal of the season.

As the period turned over and the second period got underway, Brett Budgell would find his way on to the scoreboard. Streaking down the ice, Budgell had a clean shot on Shank before a Sags defender hacked his hands. The puck continued to travel and somehow found it's way underneath the Chicoutimi netminder and past the goal line, giving Budgell his seventh goal of the season and the Islanders a 4-1 lead.

The Sagueneens, ever persistent throughout this game, refused to roll over. Early in the third period, their shorthanded unit would strike once again. Justin Ducharme would beat Colin Van Den Hurk in a foot race down the ice and go short-side on Welsh for his tenth goal on the year.

Unfortunately, that's as close as they would come. Budgell would answer back with a booming slapshot off the rush midway through the third period, putting the game on ice for Charlottetown.

Matthew Welsh had an outstanding game between the pipes for the Isles, making 21 saves in the victory.

The Islanders will have an extended vacation this week as the QMJHL shuts down for the week as the CIBC Canada-Russia series shifts Quebec. Matthew Welsh and Pierre-Olivier Joseph will suit up for Team QMJHL, while Jim Hulton will man the bench for Team Q. The Isles are back in action on Friday, November 17th, when they visit Bathurst to take on the Titan!
