Isles and Moose Keep the Maritime Action Rolling
January 31, 2021 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release
2021 has gotten off on the right foot for both the Charlottetown Islanders and Halifax Mooseheads; today, the two teams meet to see who can keep the early momentum rolling.
The Isles (13-2-0-0) picked up right where they left off in 2020, securing a 2-0 victory over the Cape Breton Eagles on Friday night. Zac Beauregard led the charge offensively with a goal and an assist in the win, while William Trudeau added his fourth goal on the season, giving him a stellar 13 points in 15 games to start the year.
Colten Ellis picked up his 13th career shutout in the victory, his tenth straight to start the season. The win made history; Ellis became just the seventh netminder in QMJHL history to start a season with double-digit victories, while his 13th shutout moved him in to a tie for seventh all-time in the category, a group that includes former Islander Matthew Welsh.
Unfortunately, that's the only major streak that stayed alive in this game. Cedric Desruisseaux will be looking to start a new goal streak after his 13-game goal streak came to an end. The overage forward from Warwick, Quebec still leads the QMJHL with 19 goals in 15 games this year.
Meanwhile, the Mooseheads (6-6-2-3) are coming off a victory over the Eagles of their own, battling back from a two-goal deficit to rattle off five straight goals, including two empty netters, in a 6-3 victory Saturday afternoon. Captain Justin Barron was the star in his first game following the 2021 World Junior Championship, picking up the game-winning goal and two assists. The Colorado Avalanche first round pick has bounced back admirably after recovering from off-season shoulder surgery, but has picked up an impressive 10 points in just nine games this year.
This was the first game that the Mooseheads iced their new-look roster for the second half of the year. While Halifax was quiet on the trade front during the winter trading period, the team did make three significant additions; import forwards Senna Peeters and Attilio Biasca joined their teammates after appearing for their respective countries at the World Junior Championships, while American defenseman Stephen Davis moved north after leaving Boston College of the NCAA.
The Islanders will still be without Patrick Guay and Braeden Virtue today, who remain in isolation after arriving to Prince Edward Island over the winter trading period.
