The 20-year-old Charlottetown Islanders netminder put together another incredible performance Sunday afternoon against the Halifax Mooseheads. Ellis, a St. Louis Blues prospect, made 35 saves, while Lukas Cormier, Cedric Desruisseaux, and Thomas Casey each recorded three points as the Islanders defeated the Mooseheads 5-1 Sunday afternoon.
"Our guys battled through rust and fatigue today, but persevered and pulled out another road victory," said Islanders head coach Jim Hulton on the victory. "The early third period goal provided a much-needed boost of energy and propelled us to our best period of the weekend."
The victory would be Ellis's 11th straight victory to start the season, extending his impressive record and one that's pushing him up the record books. He's now tied for third all-time in that category with Zachary Emond. One more victory and he'll pull in to a tie for first overall with Louis Domingue and Pierre Pérusse, who originally set the record during the 1970-1971 season.
Lukas Cormier got the ball rolling for Charlottetown on a 4-on-4 opportunity. Jumping up in to the play, Cormier received a great pass from Cedric Desruisseaux on an odd-man rush and he'd convert with a tremendous move to his backhand, going far side on Mooseheads starter Brady James for his eighth goal of the season.
Thomas Casey would keep things going near the end of the first. On a powerplay, Desruisseaux would thread the needle cross-ice with a perfect pass to a waiting Casey all alone at the side of the net. He'd make no mistake from in tight for his 13th goal of the season and a 2-0 Isles lead.
Jason Horvath would pull the Mooseheads back within one in the second period but the Islanders would put the game out of reach in the third period. Early in the third, Bailey Peach would throw a puck towards the net that Patrick Leblanc would get a stick on. The puck would take a bounce of of James's skate and in to the net, giving Leblanc his fourth of the season and Peach his first point as an Islander.
Peach wasn't done there though, as he'd set up Cormier for his second goal of the game midway through the period. The duo would complete a great give-and-go play, with the Vegas Golden Knights prospect batting the Peach feed out of midair and past Brady James for his ninth goal of the season.
Casey would add the final tally late in the game to put the nail in the coffin on the afternoon, securing the victory with his second goal of the game and 14th on the season.
Sam Oliver picked up a lone helper, giving him eleven points in sixteen games this season. Peach's two assists match his point total from all season, now giving him four points in seven games this season.
These two teams will renew hostilities Wednesday night when the Isles return home for their first game at the Eastlink Centre in 2021. Reminder that there are no tickets available for the general public; however, you'll be able to watch the game once again on Eastlink Community TV channel 10/610, or at any of our five viewing partners!
