QMJHL Charlottetown Islanders

Islanders Welcome Screaming Eagles in Season Opener

September 21, 2018 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release

After a long pre-season, the Charlottetown Islanders regular season is finally set to begin tonight, as the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles make their way to the Eastlink Centre.

The Islanders battled neck-and-neck with the Eagles last season, finishing with a 4-4-1-0 record against their Maritime Division rivals. During the pre-season, the two teams met three times, with the Islanders besting the Eagles 2 out of the 3 times, including a 4-1 victory in the final game of the season.

Cape Breton recently learned that they'd be getting a healthy boost to their line-up, as forward Egor Sokolov (Columbus), defenseman Leon Gawanke (Winnipeg), and netminder Kevin Mandolese (Ottawa) have all returned to the team following stints at NHL training camps. They'll join former 42-goal scorer Mitchell Balmas, defender Adam McCormick, and young guns Brooklyn Kalmikov, Elijah Francis, and Noah Laaouan in what will be a tough match-up for the Isles.

For Charlottetown, defensemen Pierre-Olivier Joseph (Arizona) and Hunter Drew (Anaheim) remain at their respective NHL training camps.

"We're excited that the season is finally starting after five weeks of preparation." Said associate coach Guy Girouard. "It's going to be important for us to control our emotions, as most players will have family in town tonight."

Off the ice, tonight will be the first Happy Hour Friday of the season. Join us in the Moose Light Lounge both an hour before and an hour after the game for live music and $3 beverages!

Tickets are still available at the Eastlink Centre box office, by phone at 902-629-6625, or online at https://boxoffice.eastlinkcentrepei.com
