Charlottetown Islanders News Release

In his first game as captain, Michael Horth scored twice, while newly signed goaltender, Carter Bickle stayed strong right from puck drop stopping 23 of 24 shots in the win Friday night in Halifax.

The Isles started strong with sustained pressure but Mooseheads goaltender, Jack Milner kept it scoreless early. Halifax forward Markus Vidicek tried dancing around the defense but the Islanders shut it down quickly.

Not long after Liam Kilfoil buried his first QMJHL goal to give Halifax the lead, seven minutes into the game.

The captain fought back with a goal of his own, beating Milner on the glove side for his first of the season, tying the game.

Bickle sent the Isles into the first intermission still tied, stopping a breakaway attempt by Kilfoil in the dying seconds of the period.

Charlottetown had their first powerplay opportunity of the game almost three minutes into the frame, setting the tone for a high action period for the Islanders.

Matthew Butler impressed in his first regular season game with the team having back-to-back high level scoring chances, both turned away by Milner.

Horth scored his second of the game with just under four minutes to go in the period, giving the Isles their first lead of the game. Ross Campbell and Giovanni Morneau assisted on the goal for their first points of the 2023-24 campaign.

With the shots tied at 11 apiece going into the third period, Brett Arsenault wasted no time getting in all alone against Milner, but the puck was turned aside, keeping it a one-goal-game.

The Isles retained momentum and Simon Hughes had great patience moving around the Mooseheads defensemen, but Milner continued shutting the door.

The puck started going back the other way and Bickle had to make a flurry of saves. He turned away every shot sent his way, keeping the Isles ahead on the scoreboard.

Despite the relentless Mooseheads pressure, Owen Conrad would turn and fire a 200 foot shot from behind his own goal line, scoring shorthanded on the empty net for the rookie's first goal in the QMJHL.

Conrad's goal would seal the deal on the game and the Isles come home with a 3-1 win over the Mooseheads.

Michael Horth was awarded first star for his two goal performance in his first game as the Islanders captain.

The Isles return to action for their home opener at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown, Saturday, Sept. 23 at 7:00 pm on the back end of the home-and-home against Halifax.
