Hawaiian Islanders News Release
HONOLULU â The Hawaiian Islanders announced the signing of former St. Louis High School and University of Montana standout Randyn Akiona to an af2 contract. Akiona played last season with the Macon Knights who played in the 2003 ArenaCup Championship game but lost to the Tulsa Talons 58-40.
Hawaii acquired the 6-0, 190-pound wide receiver/defensive back from Macon for future considerations in last month and signed him to a 2004 contract.
"We are real fortunate to get Randyn," said Islanders Head Coach Cal Lee. "He brings experience and he knows what it takes to win."
Akiona, a 1997 graduate of St. Louis, attended the University of Montana where he helped the Grizzlies to win the 2001 NCAA Div. IAA National Championship. After spending four seasons at Montana, he played for the Macon Knights in 2002 and in 16 games caught 22 passes for 159 yards. He made a larger impact during the af2 playoffs with 14 catches for 188 yards and three touchdowns.
On defense, he recorded 15 solos, 12 assists, an interception and two fumble returns for two touchdowns.
