Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
Alex D'Orio was magnificent on Friday night in Charlottetown making 54 saves, but it wasn't enough as the Islanders edged the Sea Dogs 4-3. Saint John now sits at 2-10-2-1 while Charlottetown improves to 9-5-1-0.
The Islanders opened the scoring at 5:30 when Nikita Alexandrov stepped out from the corner and tucked a back hand past a sliding Alex D'Orio. Sea Dog James White tied the game when he scored his first QMJHL goal at 11:46 after spinning in the slot and firing a high angle shot top corner past Dakota Lund-Cornish. Saint John wasn't done there as they entered the power play at 19:11 after Brett Budgell was called for high sticking on Brady Burns behind the Charlottetown goal. Just 11 seconds into the power play Yohan Plamondon fed Cajkovic with a crisp pass out front and the Slovakian wasted no time banging home a heavy one timer to give the Sea Dogs the lead 2-1. Shots on goal favored Charlottetown in the period 21-9.
A flurry of penalties opened the second period. Deakin-Poot was called for hooking at 4:05. During the Isles power play a scrum broke out in the crease after D'Orio was bowled over. Campoli, Higgins, Hunter Drew and Nikita Alexandrov received roughing penalties on the play. A minute later Anthony Boucher was called for tripping but Alex D'Orio continued his stellar performance to keep the Sea Dogs lead secure. At 7:24 the Islanders were called for too many players on the ice but were able to kill off the penalty and receive their own power play when James White was called for tripping at 11:00. With seven seconds left in the power play ex-Sea Dog Kevin Gursoy redirected a shot into the net to tie the game at 2-2. With just over three minutes to go in the period the Sea Dogs coughed up the puck at their own blue line and Daniel Hardie was able knock in a Keith Getson rebound to put the Islanders back up on top 3-2. With time winding down Saint John took to the power play at 19:30 but were unable to get setup as the buzzer sounded. Shots on goal were 16-9 Charlottetown.
Saint John was unable to score on the remaining power play from the second period but soon got another chance when Keith Getson was called for high sticking at 2:09. Yohan Plamondon continued his red hot play as of late banking a shot from the side of the net off of P.O. Joseph to tie the game at 3-3. Shortly after Saint John killed off a penalty midway through the third, Keith Getson batted in a puck that had bounced off the boards to give the Islanders the late lead 4-3. With just over a minute to play Saint John pulled D'Orio for the extra attacker but couldn't find the back of the net to tie it late. Your final score in Charlottetown, Islanders 4, Sea Dogs 3.
Alex D'Orio was magnificent in net stopping 54 of 58. Lund-Cornish made 20 saves in the win.
