Charlottetown Islanders News Release

The COVID-19 pandemic caused a dramatic shift in the QMJHL's 2020-2021 schedule, with all games being played within the 3 regional divisions. For the Maritime Division, that means each team will play one another 12 times.

For the Charlottetown Islanders and Saint John Sea Dogs, the schedule has created 12 highly-anticipated matchups between two teams expected to fight for the division crown. Their first matchup starts tonight.

The Islanders are coming off a 4-2 victory in their season opener against the Moncton Wildcats. Charlottetown rattled off four unanswered goals over the course of three periods, with multi-point contributions from Thomas Casey and Lukas Cormier, while Keiran Gallant added a solo marker of his own. Colten Ellis made 20 saves for his first victory as an Islander.

Saint John, meanwhile, suffered the opposite fate. After jumping out to a three-goal lead against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, they allowed three third period goals before Riley Kidney won the game in overtime for Bathurst. The Sea Dogs will be looking for a little retribution tonight in front of their home crowd.

With the 2020 NHL Draft set to begin October 6th, all eyes will be on the back-end in this game. Lukas Cormier, Jeremie Poirier, and Will Villeneuve are all expected to hear their names called fairly early in the draft, and this will serve as the final time that NHL scouts will get to see the trio in action before the draft gets underway.

Another defender who is hoping to hear his name called is the Sea Dogs' Charlie DesRoches. The Summerside, PEI native had a strong sophomore season, recording 33 points while playing all 64 games the season had to offer. He picked up his first point of the season last night, an assist on Alex Drover's second period goal.

All of tonight's action can be heard across the airwaves on Ocean 100's Saturday Night Hockey. Tune in at 6:45 as George Matthews and Cory Arsenault get you cued up with a game preview before the puck drops at 7:00pm!
