Cape Breton Eagles News Release
HALIFAX - The Cape Breton Eagles hit the win the column for the first time in 2020-21 on Saturday night with an overtime win in Halifax.
It was tentative early part of the game with neither team able to establish sustained possession- however, Halifax was able to make the first period difference with the period's only power play. Just 16 seconds into the man advantage, Zach L'Heureux sent a backhand pass to Jordan Dumais across the crease and he tapped it by William Grimard to make it 1-0.
Halifax's power play was at it again early in the second period. Robert Orr converted a pass from Cole Foston and the Mooseheads briefly had a two goal lead. It didn't last long though- the next part of the game belonged to Nathan Larose.
Larose got the Eagles on the board by firing a shot through a Davis Cooper screen. Then before the seven minute mark, Larose rushed up the right side of the rink and put a trick shot by Cole McLaren from deep in the Mooseheads zone.
There was another goal to come from the Eagles blueline before period's end. FJ Buteau floated a shot from the blueline that went off a Halifax body in front and the Eagles rookie had his first career goal.
The Eagles earned their first power play of the game early in the third period but couldn't add to the lead with Liam Peyton in the box. Following the penalty Peyton rushed up the ice and knotted the score at 3.
Goals would be traded again before period's end. It was time for another first- sophomore Eagles forward Connor Trenholm tipped a point shot from Jérémy Langlois on the blueline for his first career goal and to place the Eagles in the lead. The last twist in regulation came when Orr flew up the right side of the ice, getting the puck on goal and bouncing it off to Kyle Petten to tie the game. After a review for a high stick, the goal was upheld.
The game needed overtime to find a winner, but not much of it. Ryan Francis led the rush for the Eagles into the Halifax zone and after he got a shot on McLaren. Jarrett Baker was there to backhand the rebound into the open part of the goal to give the Eagles their first win of the year 45 seconds into the extra session.
Grimard picked up the win, stopping 25 of 29 Halifax shots. McLaren took the loss, allowing four goals on 34 shots.
