Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
August 16, 2005 - It took a little bit of extra work on Tuesday night but the IronBirds (19-35) persevered and knocked off the Hudson Valley Renegades (26-26) 4-3 in 10 innings thanks to an RBI single up the middle by Ryan Finan with the bases loaded and 1 out. It was the first win of the season for Aberdeen over Hudson Valley in 6 tries.
Starter Brad Bergesen was excellent for Aberdeen, throwing 6 innings and allowing 3 runs (2 earned). He struck out 4 while walking none, working quickly on his way to a no-decision.
Hudson Valley scored an unearned run in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Aberdeen bounced back and put 2 runs on the board in the bottom of the 4th on a Corey Shafer RBI single and an error.
After single runs for Hudson Valley in the 5th and 6th tied the score and then put the Renegades up a run, Finan answered with his first heroics of the night, a solo home run into the bullpen in right field to tie the game at 3.
The game would remain that way thanks to stellar bullpen work by Kyle Boehm (3 scoreless innings) and Bryan Dumesnil, who pitched a scoreless 10th and got the win.
A leadoff single in the 10th by Bobby Andrews got the winning rally started. He then stole second on a fake bunt by Ryan Steinbach, who successfully sacrificed Andrews to third later in the at-bat. Newly announced 2005 NYPL All-Star Mark Fleisher then stepped in, and drew an intentional walk. Kyle Dahlberg was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Finan laced a single up the middle past the drawn in infield to win the game.
The series finale is set for Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. with Dennis Robinson getting the ball for Aberdeen. It will be his first start for the 'Birds in 2005 after 110 innings of work in Delmarva.
