Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
The IronBirds (11-19) dropped the first game of a 6-game homestand on Friday night to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (17-14) by the score of 6-5. A valiant comeback in the 9th fell a run short, when pinch hitter Jason Maxey struck out with the tying run at first in the person of Keith Reed. Sloppy defense did the IronBirds in, as they booted 5 balls on the night.
Kyle Boehm made an emergency start and took the loss, his first of the season, lasting 1.2 innings and allowing 2 runs on 2 hits. Moises Hernandez followed Boehm and kept the IronBirds in the game over the next 4.1, giving up 2 more runs.
Down 4-1 in the 6th, the IronBirds scratched lone runs across in the 6th and 7th innings to cut the deficit to 2 (after Mahoning Valley put up a run in the top of the 7th). A solo home run by Reed energized a packed house of 6,363 and got the âBirds back in the game.
Mahoning Valley added an insurance run in the top of the 9th, and needing 3 runs to tie, the IronBirds scored twice before stranding the tying run.
Game 2 between the IronBirds and Scrappers on Saturday night will see Opening Day starter Ryan Schwabe take the ball for the IronBirds. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
