College Professional Baseball Club closer to unveiling nickname

STATE COLLEGE-- Voting in the State College Professional Baseball Club "Name the Team Contest" has concluded and residents of State College and Centre County are closer to learning the new franchise's identity for the inaugural 2006 season.

Fans of the new affiliated minor league club had from July 1st to 10th to select from the five finalists--Anglers, Coalys, Furnace, Haymakers and Spikes. Voting was done on-line at www.statecollegebaseball.com and through newspaper balloting in local newspapers, including the Altoona Mirror and Centre Daily Times.

While the remaining votes for the "Name the Team Contest" have been counted, the club is currently working on logo and uniform designs and is communicating with the Minor League Baseball office in St. Petersburg, Fla. to secure the proper licensing for the new team name. The club is expecting to unveil the team's name, logo, colors and uniforms by the end of summer.

"We are currently working closely with Minor League Baseball to determine what steps need to be taken to properly unveil the identity of the franchise so that we can hit the ground running with the marketing efforts for the club," said State College Professional Baseball Club General Manager Rick Janac. "We are looking forward to unveiling the name, logo and overall identity of the franchise, but there is a process that we must go through before being able to present that to the residents of State College and Centre County and the rest of minor league baseball."

The new franchise will play in the Class-A short-season New York-Penn League beginning in June 2006, pending relocation approval by the New York-Penn League and Minor League Baseball, and review by the Baseball Office of the Commissioner. Through a unique operating agreement between the ownership of the Altoona Curve Baseball Club and Penn State University, the affiliated minor league club will share brand-new Medlar Field at Lubrano Park with the Nittany Lions' Baseball Program, which competes in the Big Ten Conference.
