Iowa Wolves News Release
CLEVELAND - The Iowa Wolves fell short at Cleveland on Monday night as the Charge rallied in the final minutes for a 107-104 win at the Wolstein Center in the first meeting of a two-game back-to-back series.
Iowa (4-3), which trailed for much of the night, held a 102-98 lead after Chris Silva made one of two free throws with 1:43 left in the game. Silva recorded his second-straight double-double with season highs of 18 points and 17 rebounds.
Cleveland (5-4) countered with a three-pointer by Kyle Guy 12 seconds later and on its next possession Iowa had two scoring chances but shots by McKinley Wright IV and Isaiah Miller were missed.
Andrew Nembhard Jr. followed with two free throws that gave the Charge the lead back. Miller then converted a layup off an assist by Wright IV to go ahead 104-103 with 27.7 seconds left. Nembhard was then fouled and made both free throws to give Cleveland the lead once again at 105-104 with 18.7 seconds to go.
The Wolves had the basketball but Brian Bowen II, who missed the team's past two games due to his Team USA assignment, was whistled for an offensive foul with 8.7 seconds left. Iowa head coach Jeff Newton challenged the call, but it was upheld as the Wolves had to foul Nembhard. Nembhard missed both free throws but rebounded his miss on the second and was quickly fouled as he made both to seal the win.
Bowen finished with 18 points in his return while Wright IV had 14 points and seven assists. Off the bench, Miller had 13 points and Brandon Sampson had 11 and seven rebounds. Iowa nearly overcame a tough shooting performance behind the arc as the team was just 7-of-33 with five threes coming in the final quarter.
Nembhard scored a game-high 31 points while Malik Newman poured in 25 points off the bench. Nembhard and Newman each made four three-pointers as the Charge made 14 as a team.
Cleveland and Iowa have a fast turnaround with the rematch set for Tuesday night at 5 p.m. CT.
