DES MOINES, Iowa - In its first game after the NBA G League All-Star break, the Iowa Wolves defeated the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, 117-114, on Friday night in front of a season-high 9,631 fans at Wells Fargo Arena.
On assignment from Minnesota and on Timberwolves Night, Wendell Moore Jr. led Iowa (6-15) in scoring with 23 points to go with four steals and three rebounds.
Rio Grande Valley (12-7) nearly erased a 13-point deficit late in the fourth quarter pulling within two points of the Wolves. Lance Stephenson, who scored 18 points, kept it a multiple possession game with his third three-pointer of the game with 57.5 seconds left.
The Vipers continued their push as a Jarrett Culver made two more threes after Stephenson's three. However, Moore Jr. and Trevor Keels each made a pair of free throws in the final 15 seconds to hold off Rio Grande.
Keels finished with 18 points and added five assists and five steals. Tyrese Martin returned after missing the final game before the all-star break due to injury and scored 21 points. Nojel Eastern continued his strong play with 10 points, eight rebounds and a career-high five steals.
Rio Grande Valley was led in scoring by two-way Nate Hinton with 24 points. Culver scored 20 and two-way Jermaine Samuels Jr. added 19.
Iowa starts a five-game west coast road trip on March 1 when it visits the Rip City Remix in Portland, Ore.
