Stockton Thunder News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa - The Stockton Lightning (1-4) surrendered 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and the Iowa Barnstormers collected their first home victory after a six-year hiatus in a 47-24 Lightning defeat before a crowd of 10,454 at Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday night in week 5 of arenafootball2 play.
The Lightning dropped their fourth loss in a row and surrendered four turnovers in the loss as Iowa quarterback Joe Brannen threw for 135 yards, a 15-for-28 passing effort and two touchdowns.
Iowa posted the only score of the first half on Brannen's one-yard keeper up the middle, followed by a 28-point second quarter by both teams. WR Robert Kilow hauled in a 33-yard bomb over the middle with 10:44 left in the half, hiking the Barnstormers lead to 13-0.
Lightning FB Peter Tuialuuluu had two separate one-yard sprints in the second half, sandwiching a 57-yard kick return by Kilow to put the Lightning in a 20-14 hole at halftime. The Lightning had a chance to take the lead at the end of the half after a Raymond Little interception, but Daniel McLemore picked off a four-yard lob by Lightning QB Chad Elliott at the left corner of the end zone with under 10 seconds left.
Lightning kicker Alex Walls drilled his first field goal of the year, a 35-yarder, with 10:56 left in the third quarter to cut the Iowa lead to 20-17, but Tim Dodge answered with a 45-yard interception return with 2:15 left in the quarter to boost Iowa's advantage to 27-17.
Elliott exited the game in the fourth quarter in place of rookie backup Jonathan Grant, who helped get the Lightning to within a field goal by zipping a nine-yard touchdown pass in the right corner of the end zone to WR Donva Louder, a former local college product of Graceland (Iowa) University.
Iowa put the game away by scoring the final 20 points of the game on separate two-yard touchdown runs by fullbacks Terrance Freeney and Justin Butler, parlayed with a five-yard touchdown lob from Brannen to WR Bryan Pray.
Elliott tallied a 19-for-30 passing effort with 173 yards and no touchdowns before his exit, while the Lightning were led by Louder's 97 receiving yards, also adding nine catches and the only touchdown receptions. Dodge and Pray shared the Iowa lead with five catches, while Dodge led all Iowa Barnstormer receivers with 40 yards.
